Identity Theft: Education for Prevention

Overview
The U.S. Bureau of Justice defines Identity Theft as including 1. unauthorized creation of an account, 2. unauthorized use of an existing account, and/or 3. misuse of personal information for fraudulent purposes. Approximately 20% of Americans were victims of identity fraud in 2021. People in their 30s have been found to be the most likely victims of identity theft, and social media user are a high-risk group for identity theft. This presentation provides insight for identifying fraudulent behavior and avoiding victimhood.
Temple’s Digital Equity Center is an organization dedicated to providing its participants with the tools to succeed in today’s digital world. The audience was composed of members of the community who were just beginning to familiarize themselves with technology, older adults, and adults potentially reentering society.
